Titulo: Climate Vulnerability Reduction Measures in the Semi-Arid Lands: Experience from Eritrea

Resumo: Livelihoods are already challenged by the demands of climate changes in the semi-arid regions of Eritrea. Recurrent droughts, which lead to water shortage and disruption of the vegetation cycle, are considered to be the root causes of the ecological crisis. In response, the Government in collaboration with the United Nations development agencies is creating conditions for the reduction of poverty among the people inhabiting these regions. Drawing upon data from a survey of sampled households, this paper reviews the vulnerability of pastoral communities to climate variability in the northwest semi-arid lands of the country. The paper outlines the local people’s resilience to environmental constraints and examines the mitigation measures adapted by the government and appraises their impact on livelihood patterns. The study concludes that vulnerability reduction measures are best addressed when development needs and priorities of the local communities are well reflected.

Palavras Chave: Eritrea, climate vulnerability, adaptation responses.
