Titulo: Sustainable Water Resources Management in the Lake Chad Basin: Problems and Challenges
Resumo: Floods, droughts, and other weather extremes are common in the Lake Chad basin, and they have harsh and damaging effects on fisheries, livestock, wildlife, agriculture, health and water resources. As the result of the extremely arid hydroclimate, the Lake Chad basin also experiencing large variations in the amount of rainfall, spatially and temporarily. The population growths (rate 2.8%) will exacerbated existing problems of drinking water, health services, food security, ecological stresses, economic pressures... More than 65 percents of the population are still without sustainable access to safe water supplies for domestic use. However, the low population density in the rural areas complicates the provision of water and sanitation facilities. As a major response to the changing water conditions and future economic requirements, progress towards more sustainable water resource management require a multidisciplinary approach, combining both the physical and social sciences. In particular, it needs the greater involvement of social scientists with experience in policy analysis of problems where environmental, social, political, and economic variable interact. Otherwise, the challenge is to take into account global environmental change, including climate variability and climate change for sustainable development of the Lake Chad basin.
